The RCA show will be open to the public from 11am tomorrow (26th June). It’s your chance to come and see my animation ‘Bruce’ and to play with the ‘Eyebrow Hat’.
You can now view all of the 731 pages of my ‘Everyday’ project on this site. I have put the finishing touches to my home made flash viewer so that you can navigate both volumes. It is coded in AS3 which I hope to share once I have cleaned it all up and added comments.
I found myself with a spare 30 minutes this morning so I made a couple of bespoke business cards out of sheet plastic, card and the insides of a breadboard.
I spent the day at the National film and Television school working on the final mix with my sound designer (Jussi Honka). It all seems to be falling into place ready for the films release at the end of June.
Our work in progress show is running from the 4th of Feb till the 11th. My grid player is being exhibited for the first time (see the video below to see it in action). The 2 wheel controller plays back a grid of frames. One wheel plays across the grid on the x axis, whilst the other plays down the x axis. This gives the view the interactive ability to explore all 144 frames of the animation in along various paths.
Tech stuff:
The controller uses 12 magnets on each wheel to trigger a reed switch which then communicates with Flash via an arduino. Flash interprets the data and moves the grid across or down by one square for each magnet that passes. The sound is produced in MAX MSP (collaboration with Chris Chong from the royal college of music). Flash sends a piece of data for each frame change, which is interpreted according to the time passed since the last hit. This creates synced sounds which vary in pitch with the speed of the wheel(s) being spun.
Here is the demo that I put together for our work in progress show. This new model uses small tubes to reroute the string so that the brows sit closer to the face. This cuts down on shadows cast onto the face as well as lateral movement of the brows. I will be starting work on the final version next week, and also setting up the show so make sure you keep an eye on things here.
Here is a short video demonstrating the ibrow wearable prototype. It needs a bit of work but it seems to be getting there. Here an image showing the hat along side the controller (notice the 2 sliders that control the eyebrows height and the 2 knobs that alter the pitch of each brow). More coming very soon.
