Introduction

This section of my site aims to explore the idea of 2 dimensional playback. Animating on a grid rather than along a reel of film allows the viewer to control the playback in 2 dimensions rather than 1. The Online player and downloadable template provide an extremely simple framework to facilitate experimentation. Anyone is welcome to contribute to this project (Contribute). Once you have uploaded your grid you will instantly be able to play through it using the Player.

Why and where from?

2DP is the result of my first year project studying Animation at the RCA. It began as a study of joints during which I looked at the relationship between two points. I began exploring colour tracking and set up a simple rig using a Circular Scalextric track with 2 cars to act as the control points. Whilst thinking about a suitable output I came up with the idea of playing across a selection of sequences whilst also playing through them. I then realized that if each sequence referenced the last then the illusion of animation would take place in additional dimension. Trying to explain this idea to myself and others I produced the simple 2DP grid and player system.

Other methods of playback

One disadvantage with the online player is that its interactive input is limited. I am working on other more tangible and effective methods of controlling the playback. For example the Scalextric track controller and Music box player described in the (experiment) section.
